Yesterday's tongue clipping went well - but recovery can take up to 2 weeks. She's doing great and can finally raise her little tongue! We also found out that both Mommy and Daddy are tongue-tied. This explains Mommy's overbite, Daddy's need for a spacer, and the fact that we both spent over 4 years in braces!
Sweet little girl smiled for the first time two days ago - and we all melted. Her tongue is scabbing over and looks like it'll heal nicely. Oh - and last weight check has her at 10 1/2 pounds!
Breastfeeding is slowly getting better. She met her sweet baby cousin for the first time over the weekend - born just 6 days after our princess!
Did I mention she's a totally content baby? It's amazing to me that she will wake up and just lay there - waiting for someone to notice. Our little man woke up happy 3 times, maybe 4. But I'm pretty sure it was just 3. And that is NOT an exaggeration.
So, nursing isn't quite going as well as I'd hoped. She does well - but not great. And I'm hoping for great. But she's 7 weeks old now and such a cutie. She's smiling at us and cooing - and big brother just loves her to bits.
I decided to try her on probiotics. They're by a company called Bio Gaia and came highly recommended by a good friend. Studies have been done showing a dramatic decrease in fussiness for colicky babies. So far so good! We're on day 6, so it's still early to know anything for sure. But there were nights when she'd cry for 3 hours (to the minute!) in the evenings, and we're hoping this will help her immature digestive system.
GM - I truly think we have the same LC! Mine wants me to eliminate dairy, too, which I find is very very difficult. I hope that nursing is getting better for you. The changes for us are infinitesimally slow, but the slope is upward. I strongly recommend the CS therapy if you haven't done it already.
Spoke with Lactation Consultant #2 and realized that our remaining nursing issues are due to an oversupply of milk! Yikes. So we're now working on decreasing my supply (yummy mint tea!) and it is helping out so much!
Today I put her in this beautiful red & white outfit, but didn't have a matching hat to go with it. I found her Red Sox beanie (thanks Auntie Alicia!) and you should have heard the comments in church! Of course there were the fans, but then there were those who reprimanded us for "indoctrinating" our little girl so young! Funny. I just wanted her hat to match.
Okay, so she's definitely NOT the first-born. See, with him I made sure to carefully document every exciting moment and many not-so-exciting ones. The day she turned 2 months old, I didn't take her photo. And I only snapped a photo of her in her outfit on Thanksgiving. No photos of her with family members. Nothing exciting to note. And that 2-month photo didn't get taken until the next day. Poor thing. I know she'll never know. But I will.
We're all down with some sort of cold/sinus infection. She's been sleeping more than usual - except when Big Brother is. Classic.
Baby girl is smiling, cooing, and laughing now - it's so fun. I had forgotten how her big brother first laughed, until she started doing the same thing. We called it his "reverse laugh." They both sucked air in instead of laughing air out!
She's doing better with nighttime nursing sessions. I actually relax enough that I fall asleep. I did that all the time with baby boy - but I've been so tense with her.
After deciding not to eat on Thursday, I took her to the pediatrician on Friday. They couldn't find anything wrong...but she's not gaining weight well. We go back on Monday for another weight check...and for a first round of shots!
She didn't gain at all over the weekend - and may have even lost a little. That's when they ran the test & learned she has a milk protein allergy. Lovely. So Mommy's off milk for this week and we'll see how she does. Another weight check in a week.
Went to the pediatrician yesterday. Still no weight gain. Bummer. But she looks great! We'll see what we can do this week. Maybe with all the good food smells around the holiday, she'll decide to eat more. Who knows? Back next week for yet another weight check.
At our last pediatrician appointment, we found she'd gained 6 oz! Mommy was very excited - but they still want us to push the formula. She's not interested, and frankly, neither am I! Over the holidays, everyone commented on how much calmer & more content she seemed. I'm so thankful. Baby's first Christmas was fun - although she slept through most of it!
Yesterday, while big brother was on the potty, Little Miss Muffet started to laugh. She's done that before, but this was the first time she sustained the laughter. He thought it was hysterical, so he started laughing - which of course made her laugh even more. It was one of those priceless moments that made me wish I could just capture it in a bottle and revisit when they're teenagers!
Hooray! No more blood in her stools and up in her weight! The hospital has given us the all-clear and we won't go back til she's 8 months old. I'm breathing a huge sigh of relief.
She's drooling like crazy and sucking on her fingers at all times. Poor thing is teething and not enjoying it. She's rolling from her back to her belly now - and is still surprised everytime. What really warms my heart though is how she reacts to her big brother. Whenever she hears him, she whips her head around to find where he is (even if she's in the middle of nursing - ouch!). She smiles and laughs and coos at him all the time. I hope this budding friendship lasts throughout their lives!
Ever since she started teething her "schedule" has been totally off! I never know anymore what's going on with naps. I sincerely hope she's not going to follow her brother's footsteps in that regard!
I cannot believe she's moving already! For the past three weeks she's been "inchworming!" It's the funniest thing. And she started saying "ma-ma!" I love it!
We set up the crib for her recently. But after a few hours she woke up screaming with gas - and woke her brother. Let's just say it was not an easy night!
Okay, so my 8mo old baby is pulling herself up to stand! She's already cruising on the furniture and holding on with only one hand! You know this spells trouble. And the worst part is - she doesn't know how to fall. Picture a baby just learning how to walk. You know how they fold right in half and land on their padded bottom? Well not mine! She falls straight back and lands on her head! It's awful!
She just started crawling for real this week. But when she sees something she really wants, it's back to the military crawl.
She laughs at everything her brother does - which still sets him into fits of giggles.
Still no teeth! The poor thing is going crazy with teething, but no teeth have poked through yet!
Baby girl has learned her first 'word'! "Uh oh!" She'll drop her pacifier - "uh oh!" - throw Cheerios off her tray "uh oh!" - it's really very cute. Oh, and still no teeth.
Two teeth have finally broken through! She's randomly letting go of things and standing on her own for just a few seconds...until Mommy notices and lunges her way!
Little Man: Daddy, what's this called? Daddy: That's a spice called mustard seed. [sensing teachable moment] Hey Buddy, did you know that God says if we have faith that's just this big that we can do great things? LittleMan: Wow. Cool. [pause, holds up salt] Daddy, what does God say about this spice?
Monkey See
Mommy: I don't want to see you doing that ever again! Little Man: Okay, don't watch me!
2 am
"Daddy, can you get my Mommy?" "Honey, it IS Mommy." "Oh...Mommy, can you get my Daddy?"
[Sigh]
Mommy, are you stressed?
How Do You Know That?
Mommy: Why are you taking so long computer?? Little Man: Mommy, it's loading!
90 Degrees
Noooo Mommy! I want whole pants!
Achoo!
"I God-blessesd on you!"
Cash or Charge?
"Mommy, what does credit mean?" "Where did you hear that word, honey?" "From my voice!"
28 confessions & pardons:
Turns out baby needs to be clipped once again - first tongue clipping didn't quite do the trick. We're headed to Long Island on Tuesday.
This page describes EXACTLY what it has been like for us: http://www.tonguetie.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=10

It looks like those blue eyes are here to stay! Just what Daddy ordered.
