Dairy Diary

Monday: We find out baby girl has a milk protein allergy. Two options - formula, or Mommy goes dairy-free. I opt for the latter, but don't have lunch til 3:30 since I have no idea what to eat. Phone call to nutritionist reveals Little Miss needs to be a patient for them to talk to us. Appointment made for Wednesday.

Tuesday: Peanut butter and jelly for lunch, pasta for dinner. Mommy's 6-week postpartum visit became a 12-week postpartum visit. Midwife wishes us the best of luck with going dairy-free.

Wednesday: 8:20 appointment at the Children's Hospital. We don't leave until 1:30. Peanut butter and jelly for lunch. Pasta for dinner. Nutritionist calls to say she'll email us the milk-free/soy-free information. Turns out no soy either. Unfortunately, she can't find it and will have to fax it tomorrow.

Thursday: Appointment with breastfeeding-specialist-who-used-to-be-a-pediatrician goes very well. She gives us lots of tips and ideas, but doesn't want to be "another cook in the kitchen" on the matter of dairy-free living. We'll wait to talk to the nutritionist. Daddy realizes he's left the fax at work, so heads back for a 10pm visit to the office, followed by a run to the grocery store for lots of fruits and veggies. Bagel for breakfast. Peanut butter and jelly for lunch. Too upset to eat dinner.

Friday: Snowstorm means the nutritionists left early. Daddy's sent home early from work. Salad for lunch. Pasta (with meat!) for dinner. Upset stomach through the night...detoxing??

Disclaimer: I know that pasta and pb&j is not a great diet to be on. Don't worry - I just needed to get some better ideas...and some food from the grocery store!

Saturday: Mommy and Baby aren't feeling great. Baby is very fussy and hasn't slept well. New food idea - omelettes with veggies! Also found new website: www.godairyfree.org

oh, veggie omelettes sound GREAT!

Sunday: Cooked up something new - including chicken and sun-dried tomatoes. Week 1 of dairy-free living is complete.

Monday: Still blood in baby's stools. At least we're feeling better.

Tuesday: Heading north to visit family for the holidays. Need to rethink every meal. This is not the best time to be doing this!

Holidays: I went shopping with my Mom to make sure there was food in the house I could eat. And then of course, everyone wanted to eat my food. I found myself getting very possessive over tortilla chips! Things were going well, until extended family came over and the buffet was spread. My spaghetti had nothing on the eggplant parmesan and the alfredo dish. And I could have cried into my Italian ice when they brought out the chocolate trifle and cheesecake.

Thankfully, everyone said Little Miss seems so much calmer and more content. For that, I'll stick with my spaghetti.

I am so sorry it was so difficult for you, but I am so proud of you and your determination to do this. By the way...I didn't eat a single thing of yours! I must love you a lot.

The New Year: Guess which snack food doesn't actually contain milk....OREOS! I know, totally processed, tons of nastiness - but THANK GOD there's a readily-available chocolate cookie out there for me! I threatened to eat the entire package in one sitting just because I could. Don't worry. I know how nasty that would be.

Turns out "calcium lactate" is okay. Found that out after I downed a glass of calcium-fortified orange juice and casually glanced at the ingredients. I started envisioning those razorblades cutting up her belly again - but thankfully, we're safe!

We also learned that soybean oil is okay. Something about the fat vs. the protein. I don't know. But hey - every little ingredient counts! And here's one more that's okay to eat.

I started eating hummus again - this time with tortilla chips - and really enjoy it!

I finally found a multivitamin that doesn't have milk or soy in it - it was harder than I thought it was going to be!

But I've easily lost 7 or more pounds so far - so YAY! All of baby #2's weight is off and we're cutting down into baby #1 weight now! I knew there had to be some good in this somewhere!

I made filet mignon today with sauted veggies!

We found out today that baby girl is gaining well and has no more blood in her stools. It makes this all worth it.

I was thinking about how tortilla chips are okay to eat, and wondered if tortillas themselves are okay. Turns out yes! We're going to do tacos this week!

Guilty Mom said...

Okay, we were going to have tacos - but then we got sick. Do you have any idea how hard it is to stick to a dairy-free/soy-free diet when you're sick as a dog? Crackers have soy. Chicken noodle soup has soy. Bread has soy flour. It goes on and on. Bagels got me through!

Hooray for tacos! We finally did it! And I didn't even miss the sour cream and shredded cheese.

Umm, yeah - I'm lying. But they were good anyway.

Last night we went out to eat. I spent a good hour and a half online doing research beforehand and finally found a place that had something I could order! When we got there though, the waitress informed me that there was, indeed, milk in that recipe. The manager came over with "THE BOOK" and said he'd make a special exception so I could look at it and find something to eat. Gee thanks. Why isn't your website up-to-date? Actually, I shouldn't complain. Most places don't have any allergen information available. And one Japanese place I called said they had never heard of "all-er-gens" but that they make everything with soy sauce. It's frustrating!

I just learned I love coconut milk! It is so much better than the almond milk I was using. And the ice cream - heavenly! I only wish they carried it at a local food store. Driving 40 minutes to get it - well, I'll do it, but I wish I didn't have to!

Guilty Mom said...

So I recently found out that our local grocery store is now carrying my coconut milk ice cream! I'm SO GLAD! I've had mango (eh), vanilla bean (yum), coconut (mostly yum), and chocolate (THANK YOU LORD!). I've also recently rediscovered the all-natural section of said grocery store. There are a number of options there for me - including burritos and pierogi. YAY!

Going dairy-free in the čR? No thank you!
